I wonder how many would go into panic mode or feel disconnected, suffer grief, anguish and then pangs anger if not wired into the system involving millions of others in the hive we call the worldwide internet. I may not be one of them but I do prefer knowing what is going on in my neighbourhood. A copy of the article may be downloaded by clicking on: SHOULD WE BE WIRED TO THE WORLD WIDE INTERNET
In this world of interaction with technology, one wonders whether the emerging generation is aware of a life outside the realms of technology and it’s ok not to be wired or connected. It’s ok not to be involved in the nitty gritty of everyday life and yes it’s ok not to own a piece of technology that is connected to the human body. Being wired is like getting high on a dose of heroin and becoming disconnected sends an individual into a spiral of self-doubt and feeling nauseous which eventually dissipates once that individual is reconnected. Politics is very similar to being wired.
Yes it’s all right not to be wired, but what are the alternatives. Shall the concept of being wired the panacea to all the ills that ail this nation. Is it an indication that those who are not wired will not make informed decisions? How else will they become involved with the rest of society? Will those of us who refuse and/or cannot afford to join the technological revolution be ostracised, exiled perhaps and thus becoming an endangered species or worse a disabled community. Will the aged be forced into isolation bracelets monitored and fed according to reorganised feeding programmes, all under the guise of ensuring the health, wellbeing and security of the elderly?
Perish the thought if we come to this. A life holed up in the middle of suburbia while outside life is teeming, breeding, and buzzing with excitement, is not seductive to be wired. Therefore while we live in interesting times, we have yet to unravel what we yet cannot see or fathom and you can bet your bottom dollar that the best is yet to come.
But until then, I will enjoy listening to the humming of the birds, the buzz of the bees, the song of the magpies, the wind against my face, the droplets of rain on my hands, the scurry of possums in the trees, the screeching of tyres as reminder that modernity is not too far away and the babble of voices to remind me that there are others like me who prefer not to be wired.
As always, my apologies for the poor grammar, punctuation and savagery of the English language. All that I can say is that it is great to be alive and one does not give up in the face of adversity no matter what challenges we face.
